What’s New With Mitten Crate

This month, Mitten Crate debuted a new, online store where you can purchase (individually) many of the items featured in its monthly subscription boxes! This is especially useful for those times when you A.) love a Mitten Crate item so much, you’re determined to hunt it down for another order, or B.) you want to put together a special Michigan-made gift, just with your own custom spin.

Okay, I hear ya. Mitten Crate looks and sounds great, but is it worth the hype? Even more importantly: is it right for you?

I’m here to help you decide. Below, I’ve included some of my personal favorite Mitten Crate items (all received at different times throughout this past year) to give you a glimpse at the type of products this company curates. PLUS, keep reading for a coupon code to get you started and a special giveaway! Details below. 🙂

My Mitten Crate Favorites

Milk Chocolate & Vanilla Bean Toffee (Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee)

I’ve proclaimed my affection for Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee time and time again—and I’ll continue to do so as long as they keep cranking out melt-in-your-mouth toffees. I’ve partaken in the milk chocolate and vanilla bean flavors, and they’re both amazing. Soft on the outside, just chewy enough inside, and none of that intense, brittle-like hardness you’d get with so many other toffees. When my parents visited a couple months ago, I pulled a jar of this out for a last-minute dessert . . . and they were both really surprised by how good it was, too. Looks like I may need to stock up on a few extra jars!

Poblano Chile Pepper Sauce (Hell Fire Detroit)

This bottle was completely filled . . . we’ve gone through the whole thing!

Don’t be intimidated by the name! I know that some people are cursed with super-sensitive taste buds that transform harmless flavors into unfathomable heat, but I found this green Poblano Chile Pepper Sauce to be incredibly mild and super versatile. Because it’s tangy (kind of like a Mexican-style verde sauce) with a brand-touted “earthy” flavor, I love using Poblano overtop eggs and potatoes (try eating it all together like a hash and add cheese or meat if you so desire). It’s a great way to add a fun spin on basic foods to make your breakfast, lunch, or dinner more special!

Handcrafted Maple Walnuts (Detroit Gourmet Nut Company)

The Detroit Gourmet Nut Company’s Handcrafted Maple Walnuts are better than candy. With a sweet, buttery coating, they’re great to snack on and would probably taste awesome on a salad or crumbled into some baked goods, too. I only wish I had received a giant bag since these are so good, easy to eat, and go quickly! Definitely a great product to give as a gift or set out for a small gathering.

Lovely Lavender Chocolate Chip Granola (Happy Girl Granola)

Whoa, baby . . . I think I’ve fallen in love! We finished snarfing down our last bag of Happy Girl Granola about a month ago, and my mouth is watering now just thinking about it. So far, Mitten Crate has introduced me to Happy Girl’s Cherry Almond, Lovely Lavender Chocolate Chip, and Maple Walnut Chocolate Chip flavors. While Lavender Chocolate Chip’s my favorite, I have yet to sample a Happy Girl Granola flavor I don’t adore. With just the right amount of sweetness and a touch of salt, this product’s great to snack on, gobble up with milk, or sprinkle on top of yogurt (I almost lost the last bag to Brad that way). Thankfully, I usually receive a 10 percent off coupon on months when Mitten Crate sends over some of this delightful treat, so I’m obviously considering buying out Happy Girl’s entire stock. 😉

Lavender/Lemon Shortbread Cookies (Scotty Dotty Shortbread Company)

If you haven’t already gathered, I’ve acquired a fond taste for lavender-flavored foods. And before I tried Scotty Dotty’s Lavender/Lemon Shortbread Cookies, I didn’t know I could polish off a package of cookies by myself so quickly. These little nuggets of Heaven are made from an authentic Scottish recipe with Pure Michigan butter, and deliver just enough crunch before melting into lovely, little sugar dreams. Plus, they’re cut into cute, little shapes like hearts and star-esque figures. Seven-year-old me is simply delighted that the future is filled with such magical things.

Yogurt Pretzels (Germack)

Eating through my Mitten Crate too quickly = you get a photo of the empty bag (sorry!).

As I type this, I’m finishing up my last Germack Yogurt Pretzel—and I just opened the bag last night. Always a winner in my book, Germack makes some fantastic snack mixes that are delicious and nicely-packaged (hello, gift idea!). Plus, I’m a huge fan of yogurt-covered pretzels in general so I knew I’d love these from the moment I laid eyes on them. Thank goodness the bag eventually ended up empty, or I’d have inadvertently added these to my top food groups by now!

Honorable Mentions

Gluten-Free Pecan Almond Granola (Jessica’s Natural Foods)

I’ve already mentioned granola, but Jessica’s is the brand that first got me hooked on eating this beloved breakfast staple as a solo snack. During last year’s auto show, Jessica’s Pecan Almond Granola became my go-to commuter snack (and happy place amid morning rush-hour traffic). Crumbles that are just the right size for eating sans-milk and hello—pecans and almonds together? This product doesn’t skimp on the good stuff.

Michigan Cherry BBQ and Bold Sea Salt & Vinegar Kettle Chips (Great Lakes Potato Chip Co.)

I’ve had Great Lakes Potato Chips on multiple occasions (they’re sold in grocery stores and sandwich shops all over Michigan), but had never tried either of these flavors before receiving them through Mitten Crate. Cherry BBQ pays homage to Traverse City’s signature sweet fruit, while Bold Sea Salt & Vinegar delivers a great sour-ish flavor that doesn’t make you pucker in pain the way other commercial brands might. Pair either of these with your favorite sandwich for an instant lunch upgrade.
