It’s no secret that Detroit has its fair share of unique coffee shops. If you’re new to the game, you may be surprised to find that there are some really cool places hiding right under your nose . . . or right above your head.
Allow me to introduce you to Lucky Detroit, a second-story cafe that’s located over an old-timey barber shop in historic Corktown. Being a part of the city’s oldest neighborhood isn’t just a perk for Lucky—it’s a scene-setter.
After you stop to take photos in front of the colorful mural on the outside of the building (an attraction in itself), you’ll slip into a side door, past an intimate patio area (adorned with foliage in warmer months), and up a fire escape-esque staircase to your destination: A 19th-century style bar that’ll make you feel as though you just jumped into a scene from The Greatest Showman.
Walking into Lucky Detroit truly feels like taking a step back in time. The walls are exposed brick, the floor is a gorgeous hardwood, the ceiling is open rafters, and the furniture is vintage with a modern flair. I also got caught up looking at branded merch for the first few minutes of my visit, but the real showstopper here is the gorgeous, mirror-backed bar.
Lucky Detroit: Menu & Pricing
Lucky Detroit’s coffee and espresso prices are pretty in-line with what I’ve found at other coffee shops in the area. You can get a regular cup of brewed coffee for $3, or splurge for a nitro brew at $6. Brad and I hovered somewhere in the middle: His latte cost $4 and my iced almond milk latte was $4.50 (interestingly, the upcharge was for ice, not the milk choice). As much as I loved the setting and wanted to sit and stay a while, we got our coffees to go since we had an afternoon of exploring Corktown ahead of us.
