When I first heard Come From Away was making its way to Detroit, I was intrigued but didn’t fully understand the prominence of this show. I knew the Tony Award-winning musical was one people had been raving about for the past couple of years, but aside from that, I’d never heard the songs, didn’t know anything about the characters, and didn’t have a clue about the plot. And then I dug into the story behind the critically-acclaimed show.
It feels fitting that I’m writing this article on September 11th, because Come From Away tells the fascinating true story of 7,000 stranded passengers who found themselves re-routed to Newfoundland after the devastating 2001 attacks. While cultures clashed and nerves ran high, uneasiness between passengers and locals made way for trust and gratitude, yielding unexpected friendships. Inspired by real people, the characters in Come From Away will affect audiences with their moving stories.

Following its initial success, the musical launched a second company in Canada, where it also continues to play to standing-room only Toronto audiences. The show has won numerous awards, including a Tony Award for “Best Direction of a Musical” and five Outer Critics Circle Awards including “Outstanding New Broadway Musical.” And if all that weren’t enough, Come From Away will also be getting the big screen treatment when it’s adapted into a feature film by The Mark Gordon Company.
