Happy new year, everyone! It looks like we’ve made it to January in southeast Michigan, and while I honestly don’t know how that timeline is possible, I can’t avoid the reality that it’s officially stay-inside-a-lot-more season in Detroit. But not to fear: I’ve actually found that I spend quite a bit more time downtown in the winter, and that has largely to do with all the entertainment that comes our way this time of year. Arriving this month for its premiere Detroit engagement at the Fisher Theatre? Broadway’s new hit musical, A Bronx Tale.
Based on the one-man show that inspired the now-classic film, A Bronx Tale takes audiences to the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s—where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be. The show features an original doo-wop score with music by Oscar/Grammy/Tony winner Alan Menken (he’s written music for movies like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and tons more, you guys!) and presents a tale about respect, loyalty, love, and above all else: family.
A Bronx Tale In Detroit: Show Origins
A Bronx Tale evolved from the one-man Off-Broadway play, A Bronx Tale, written and performed by Chazz Palminteri in 1989. During the original Off-Broadway and subsequent Los Angeles engagements, Robert De Niro came to see the show and brought the story (and Palminteri) to the big screen in 1993, making his film directorial debut in the process. Following the success of the film, Palminteri performed the one-man show A Bronx Tale on Broadway during the 2007-2008 Season.
Opening on Broadway to critical and popular acclaim in 2016 and ending its Broadway run in 2018, A Bronx Tale played 700 performances as the second longest-running show in the history of New York’s Longacre Theatre. With original direction by two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro and four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, A Bronx Tale will feature tour direction by Stephen Edlund with choreography by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo.
