Disclosure: This post is written in collaboration with Broadway in Detroit.

You can’t stop an avalanche as it races down a hill … and you can’t stop me from seeing Hairspray when it comes to town (at least I hope you never will)!

*Looks around to see who’ll be first to call her out on her cheese*

If you haven’t guessed by now, my good news today involves the Broadway hit, Hairspray, and its return to Detroit! I’ve loved this musical since I was in college when the movie musical came out (Nikki Blonsky/Zac Efron version, anyone?) and loved the film so much, I saw it THREE TIMES in the theater. Since then, I’ve also seen the 1988 film version (not my fave, but to each their own), but I have yet to see this absolute BOP on stage. Like 15 years later. That’s too long, guys.

Thankfully, I’m finally getting my chance to sing and dance along live with Tracy, Edna, Seaweed, and Little Inez … and if you’re up for a fun night in downtown Detroit, you’re about to get that chance, too.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray is the story of 16 year-old Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big dreams (and even bigger hair). Determined to dance her way onto TV’s most popular show, Tracy is about to learn some unexpected lessons as she attempts to change the world.

Featuring the beloved score of hit songs including “Welcome to the 60’s,” “Good Morning Baltimore,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” Hairspray is “fresh, winning, and deliriously tuneful” (The New York Times).

Hairspray premiered at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater in June 2002. The show was a smash hit when it transferred to Broadway, winning eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and became the longest-running musical to play the Neil Simon Theater, running 2,642 performances from July 18, 2002, until January 4, 2009. It is the 22nd-longest running show in Broadway history.
