UPDATED April 26, 2022: Due to breakthrough COVID cases within the company of Anastasia, the Detroit engagement of this show will begin on May 5 with performances as previously scheduled through Sunday, May 8. For questions, please contact Broadway in Detroit directly.

One day when I was in fifth grade, I excitedly mentioned to my class that I’d recently watched the movie Anastasia in the theater. Chiming in with a very-much-unwelcomed opinion, one of my classmates retorted with, “You actually saw that?” like I’d done something so incredibly stupid. So childish. For the record, I had just turned 10.

Looking back on that moment, all I can do is smile and roll my eyes as I imagine giving my fifth-grade self a hug. The truth is, Anastasia is (and always has been) a musical masterpiece with songs that slap, and I learned long ago to not measure the things you like against the opinions of a pre-pubescent boy. Or anyone else, for that matter.

Now, nearly 25 years later, the excitement around Anastasia lives on in the form of the widely-beloved Broadway musical, now on tour! I caught this show the last time it visited Detroit in 2019, and am excited to see all the magic and music live on stage once again.

Anastasia At Detroit’s Fisher Theatre: Show Details

From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime and inspired by the beloved films, Anastasia transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of 1920s Paris as a brave, young woman named Anya sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

Anastasia began performances on Broadway in March 2017 at the Broadhurst Theatre to rave reviews and played to sold-out audiences for more than three years before expanding with tours across North America, Japan, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands. Globally, the show has been performed more than 2,500 times and has sold 3.4 million tickets. Anastasia has also garnered more than 15 major international awards, including Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as “Best New Musical” in Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands.

How Similar Is Anastasia The Broadway Musical To The 1997 Movie?

While the stage adaptation of Anastasia is outlined similarly to the original animated film, the Broadway tour version is grounded a bit more in reality. Long story short, there’s no Rasputin or Bartok the talking bat, and instead, communist loyalists stand in as the show’s pervasive villain. In terms of music, Anastasia fans will be happy to hear old favorites like Once Upon A December and Journey To The Past, with plenty of new numbers sprinkled in, as well.
