As Broadway in Detroit’s 2021-22 season wraps up (don’t worry—there’s plenty more to come this spring for the 2022-23 season!), the motor city welcomes a new musical that’s not only lively and heartwarming—it’s also one of the most Tony Award-winning musicals of all time. It’s time to grab your tickets and get ready to learn why everyone’s fallen head-over-heels for the musical stage production of The Band’s Visit.

The Band’s Visit At Detroit’s Fisher Theatre: Show Details

The Band’s Visit tells a joyful, offbeat story of a band of musicians who mistakenly arrive in a town that’s off the beaten path. Under the spell of the desert sky, with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected ways. Featuring a Tony- and Grammy-award-winning score, The Band’s Visit rejoices in the way that music makes us laugh, cry, and brings us together.

Based on the screenplay by Eran Kolirin, The Band’s Visit is one of four musicals in Broadway history to win the unofficial “Big Six” Tony Awards, which include Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical. Award-winning Israeli film actor Sasson Gabay will reprise the role of Tewfiq, the role he created in the 2007 film of The Band’s Visit and has played on Broadway and in more than 17 cities on the First National Tour. Joining him to lead the company is critically-acclaimed actress, Janet Dacal (Prince of Broadway, Wonderland, In The Heights), in the role of Dina.

In addition to 10 Tony Awards, The Band’s Visit holds “Best Musical” awards from the Drama League, New York Drama Critics’ Circle, the Outer Critics Circle, the Lucille Lortel, and the Obies. The Band’s Visit also holds a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and a 2019 Daytime Emmy Award for a performance of “Answer Me” on NBC’s “Today.”

**NOTE** The Band’s Visit replaces Ain’t Too Proud as the final show in Broadway In Detroit’s 2021-22 Subscription Series. Ain’t Too Proud will now become part of the Broadway In Detroit 2022-23 Series (click here for more details).
