Can you believe we’ve gone all summer without a Broadway musical in the motor city? Well, thankfully the drought is over because Broadway in Detroit is back with the second show of its 2023-24 season! Kicking things off this fall: Funny Girl, the iconic musical comedy revival.
Funny Girl in Detroit: Show Details
Funny Girl shares the story of Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreams of a life on stage. After being told time and time again that she’ll never be a star, Fanny becomes one of the most beloved performers in history, stunning audiences with her talent and—ahem, funny—antics.
Deemed as “vivacious and delightfully glitzy” by Vogue, Funny Girl features unforgettable songs like “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m The Greatest Star,” and “People.” The show is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie), featuring the classic score by Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award winner Jule Styne, with lyrics by Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Bob Merrill, (comprising additional songs from Styne & Merrill). The original book by Isobel Lennart, from an original story by Miss Lennart, is revised by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots, Newsies).
